Swifts recover to pinch comeback win

THE NSW Swifts have emerged victorious from an arm wrestle with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, winning 64 goals to 63.

In a match that was tight all game, the Swifts pulled through when it countered and the Lightning just buckled under pressure.

It was goal-for-goal for the first nine goals of the match, but thanks to an excellent rebound from Kadie-Ann Dehaney, the Lightning were able to convert up the other end and pinch an early lead.

However, their lead did not last long as the Swifts nabbed the next two goals to counter and eliminate the lead.

It was the Swifts who were next to build a two goal lead and still held their two goal lead at the beginning of the Power Five period. However, after Dehaney picked off another long Swifts feed into the circle, the Lightning converted and were able to eliminate the deficit.

Things went goal for goal for the rest of the quarter, but when the quarter time buzzer went it was the Lightning who were ahead by the narrowest of margins.

Interestingly enough, the first quarter was still tight even with neither side even attempting a Super Shot, much less nailing one.

The Swifts got the better of the starts to the second quarter as they scored the first three goals of the quarter to take a two goal lead.

The Lightning were not going to go away, and as such were able to eliminate the deficit. They did also eventually take the lead in the shadows of the Power Five period.

They maintained their lead throughout the Power Five period, and as such took a game high three goal lead into the main break.

The Swifts again got the better start of the two teams in the third quarter, scoring the first three goals of the match to eliminate the deficit.

However as the Power Five period was coming, the Lightning had extended their lead back out to as much as a game high five goals.

Helen Housby had other ideas, and after she landed two Super Shots the margin was back to a mere single goal at the final change.

The final quarter was just about as tight as it got.

Teams went goal for goal and neither side could break away from the other on the scoreboard.

The Lightning did eventually build a two goal lead in the shadows of Power Five, but after yet another Housby Super Shot, things were back level again.

With 35 seconds to go, Housby landed another Super Shot to put the Swifts ahead, and the Lightning buckled under the pressure, and were unable to take back the lead.

For the Swifts Sarah Klau (four deflections, three gains, two intercepts) was prolific in defence, while Housby (15 regular goals from 16 attempts, thee super shots from four attempts, 24 feeds, 15 assists) had a strong impact both in and out of the ring.

Meanwhile for the Lightning Dehaney had another solid game (four gains, for deflections, three intercepts), while Annie Miller (43 feeds, 21 assists) was an absolute workhorse in mid court.
