Triple treat for City West as Falcons fly high again
THE City West Falcons have established a true dynasty in the Victorian Netball League, defeating the Boroondara Express 64-53 to win the 2024 Grand Final, their third flag in a row.
The Falcons led convincingly for most of the match as the key players really stood up and really did not allow the Express to get back into the game.
Best on court honours went to Montana Holmes, who had a big game in midcourt for the Falcons.
It was as even as it could get early. Both sides were finding their goal shooters with relative ease and Isabelle Hodgson and Jane Cook were not letting their team mates down.
Eventually the Falcons did find their way to the lead, and quickly established a handy buffer and despite the best intercept efforts of the likes of Taylah Brown the Express could not reel the margin back in. That margin ultimately sat at five at the first change.
The Falcons increased that margin early in the second quarter off the back of some increased defensive pressure from Sophie Hanrahan and Melissa Oloamanu in the defensive circle.
Although the Express did get a few turnovers, Hanrahan and Oloamanu were picking up more, and with Cook up the other end proving very hard to stop, the lead just grew from there for the Falcons.
Things went a lot better for the Express in the third term.
The Falcons again had the better start to the term, but as the quarter progressed the Falcons started to get their flow going. Eight goals to three in the final five minutes in favour of the Express saw the margin back at six at the final change.
Unfortunately that momentum did not last the full final 15 minutes for the Express.
Although they did get within three goals inside the first five minutes of the final term, the Falcons rested back control and scored 14-5 in the last 10 minutes of the match to blow the lead back out in their favour and take the win.
