Wallam bolts into Diamonds squad

THE 18-player initial Diamonds squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom has been announced.

A squad of up to 22 can be selected ahead of the games, and Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich has said that positions are still up for grabs, and that the selectors will be monitoring the performances for the remainder of the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season.

There have not been too many surprises in the squad, which much of the squad from the Quad Series in January making up this squad.

The big inclusion into the squad though is Queensland Firebird Donnell Wallam, who after only debuting in Round 1 of this year’s (SSN) season, has had quite the blinder of a start to her SSN career.

Seven of the SSN teams are represented in the squad, with the only team to not have a player make the Diamonds squad is the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

In a statement on the Australian Diamonds site,, Marinkovich said that “Selection definitely hasn’t been an easy task.”

“We have such a great depth of talent within our system across every position on the court and I congratulate those who have been selected.

“We have selected 18 athletes and will continue to closely monitor performances throughout the Suncorp Super Netball season, with the potential to add to the squad throughout the year.

“This squad showcases an incredible breadth of experience and new emerging talent.

“We have our sights firmly set on the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, and we are also incredibly excited for international netball to return to Australian soil later this year.”
