Young Guns star in #TeamGirls Cup

THERE was a lot to like about the pre-season #TeamGirls Cup with plenty of youngsters and up and coming players proving their worth and putting their hand up to star in the Suncorp Super Netball season this year.

Collingwood goal attack Gabrielle Sinclair dominated in the goal circle thanks to her lovely shots, impressive timing and ability to feed the ball cleverly into the goal circle to teammate Shimona Nelson. Accuracy and volume seemed to be no issue for Sinclair who slotted seamlessly into the line-up. She impressed with her hard drives into the circle, good rotation in the circle and paired exceptionally well with Nelson highlighting the damaging force they could become if given more court time. At the age of 20, Nelson has already come a long way and looks to have the shooting position sown up for the Pies. Meanwhile, Melissa Bragg also starred making her presence felt in at wing defence with her hands over pressure, speed and ability to disrupt the attacking play.

Lara Dunkely got the call up for the Vixens and she did not disappoint working hard through the centre. She was clean with ball in hand and proved that she can easily step into the centre role during the Suncorp season if needed. For the West Coast Fever, Kaylia Stanton displayed her netball smarts and ability to hit the scoreboard with her smooth movement in the circle. Training partner Emma Cosh was also impressive for the Fever when she was on the court.

Toni Anderson and Amy Parmenter stood up for the GIANTS with Parmenter really owning that centre position. She worked hard both in attack and defence hitting the circle edge with precision. Anderson also did a wealth of work in at wing defence applying plenty of pressure on her wing attack counterpart. The GIANTS will also be impressed with the effort from Kiera Austin credit to her work in the circle and accuracy to post. Austin did not shy away from the shot and did a truckload of work to deliver the ball into Jo Harten throughout the competition.

The NSW Swifts saw plenty of youngsters assert themselves on the competition with the likes of Sophie Garbin and Sophie Halpin impressing across the court. Garbin was competitive throughout the tournament and was a real target in the circle for the Swifts with her ability to hit the scoreboard and clever positioning. While Halpin was solid in at wing defence getting plenty of hands to ball and interrupting the attacking flow of the opposition.

Once again Firebirds defensive duo Kim Jenner and Tara Hinchliffe impressed with their ability to read the play and apply pressure over the shot. Twin Maddison Hinchliffe was also solid through the middle while Tippah Dawn also made her presence felt in the circle.

The Thunderbirds boasted a relatively inexperienced line-up with the likes of Sasha Glasgow and Cody Lange working seamlessly together in the shooting circle. The rotation through the circle was solid while the accuracy to post at times wavered. Defensively Shamera Sterling starred picking up plenty of intercepts and deflections. In the last game of the round Sterling notched up nine gains, seven intercepts and 10 deflections proving her dominance.
