2020 ATP BMW Open fantasy tennis: Top two seeds out as Murray joins clay courters in semis
TOP seed and home nation hero, Alexander Zverev is out of the 2020 ATP BMW Open fantasy tennis tournament. The top German player bowed out in Munich in a three-set loss, suffering the same fate as the tournament’s second seed, Matteo Berrettini.
It was seventh seed Chilean Cristian Garin who toppled Zverev, stunning him in the opening set to break three times and take it in just 28 minutes 6-0. The German top 10 player bounced back to regain the momentum and take the second set 6-2 to level the match, but Garin again found the form of the first set to win a crucial early break and held on from there to record a 6-0 2-6 6-4 victory.
He now takes on fourth seed Diego Schwartzman who knocked out Frenchman Benoit Paire with relative ease. The diminutive South American was far too good for Paire, winning 6-2 6-3 in an hour and five minutes. It was a similar story for the only player remaining in the title race ranked higher than Schwartzman, with third seed Roberto Bautista Agut booking a spot in the last eight with a straight sets win.
Bautista Agut toppled Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 6-3 in an hour and 20 minutes. With not much between the duo, the Spaniard weathered Tsonga’s fierce shotmaking with some great court coverage and earned the win with four breaks to two across the contest.
In the final match of the quarter finals, Great Britain’s Andy Murray continued his run into the final four with a huge victory over Berrettini. In a momentum-swinging contest, Murray recovered from a missed opportunity in the second set to post a 6-1 3-6 7-6 victory in two hours and four minutes.
Murray now takes on Bautista Agut for a spot in the final, followed by the clash between two South Americans in Garin and Schwartzman.
