A PAIR of stunning upsets has seen the top two players in the 2020 ATP Estoril Open fantasy tennis competition bundled out in a remarkable day of results. Both top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and second seed Gael Monfils exited the tournament in their first match after a bye in the opening round. Elsewhere, the five other seeds in action all advanced to ensure there was some predictability about the day.

Tsitsipas won the first set against a dogged Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5, but then failed to capitalise on his chances when they presented themselves, slipping up in both the second and third set tiebreakers. Carreno Busta won 7-5 and 7-2 in the tiebreakers respectively on his way to a 5-7 7-6 7-6 victory. It was a lot more one-sided for Monfils’ exit, doing down in a disappointing display to fellow veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet, 6-4 6-3.

Stan Wawrinka had no rustiness to shake off in his contest, blitzing Reilly Opelka 6-3 6-0 in 62 minutes of play to breeze through to the quarter finals of the tournament. Third seed Belgian David Goffin had a bit more of a challenge on his hands, needing three sets and two hours to finally dispose of Australian Nick Kyrgios, 4-6 7-5 6-2 to move through to the final eight.

In other results, the three seeds who won on day one continued their form with victories in the second round, starting with a come-from-behind win by Italian fifth seed Fabio Fognini. The firebrand fought back from losing the first set to defeat Australian John Millman 3-6 6-2 7-6 and win the deciding tiebreak in an absolute epic 22-point contest, 12-10. Sixth seed Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov won through with a 6-4 7-6 triumph over American Sam Querrey, while Budapest runner-up Filip Krajinovic defeated French qualifier Jeremy Chardy 6-3 6-3.

In the final match of the day, Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili showed his fight by coming back to knock off Japan’s Kei Nishikori 2-6 6-1 6-3 in what was his second consecutive win over a former top 10 player.

In the quarter finals, Fognini takes on Wawrinka and Dimitrov faces Goffin in a battle of the seeds, while seventh seed Krajinovic now locks horns with Carreno Busta, as Basilashvili tackles Gasquet in the last quarter final.
