2020 ATP Estoril Open fantasy tennis: Fognini and Dimitrov join 2020 title winners in semis
THE semi-finals have been decided with two 2020 title winners on track for a second triumph in the calendar year, while the remaining top four seeds were bundled out by those players just below them. Fifth seed Fabio Fognini, sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov, seventh seed Filip Krajinovic and the unseeded Nikoloz Basilashvili all booked spots in the semi-finals after wins.
The best match of the day was between Fognini and fourth seed Stan Wawrinka in a three-set contest that lasted three and a half hours. Winning the first set 7-5, Fognini had his work cut out for him against the Swiss hitter, losing the second set 6-3. The pair produced some of the best tennis of the tournament thus far in the third and deciding set, as Fognini won 7-5 in the tiebreaker and make a way through to the penultimate round.
Fognini now faces Basilashvili in the semi-finals whom the latter also had to survive a three-set epic clash. Coming up against French veteran Richard Gasquet, Basilashvili raced away to a 6-1 first set win, but dropped the second set 6-2. After two counter contrasting sets in the first two sets, the decider was one to watch with a late break the difference between the duo and Basilashvili escaping with the win.
In the top half of the draw, seventh seed Krajinovic continued his terrific 2020 form by booking another semi-finals spot courtesy of a straight sets win over Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. Krajinovic won 6-1 7-5 in an hour and 36 minutes to book a date with Dimitrov in the last four. The Bulgarian won 6-3 7-5 against David Goffin, with two breaks the key difference between the pair in the match.
Fognini and Basilashvili face off in the first semi-final tomorrow, before Dimitrov and Krajinovic clash in the other deciding contest.
