2020 ATP Geneva and Lyon Opens fantasy tennis: Wawrinka and Monfils through to home finals

THE two 2020 ATP Tour fantasy tennis finals this week will have heavy support for one combatant after representatives from the home nations of Switzerland and France won through to the deciders following semi-finals wins.

In Geneva, Stan Wawrinka had the crowd behind him as he downed top seed and world number six, Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The match lasted more than an hour and a half before the Swiss star with the strong backhand took out the inconsistent German 6-3 7-5. He now faces another top 10 player in the final after Greek up and comer Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his spot in the final.

Tsitsipas won 7-5 6-2 against third seed Belgian David Goffin to make his way through to the Geneva Open final. More importantly, the one-hour and 40-minute result meant the Greek moved back up to sixth in the ATP World Rankings after losing that spot to Zverev a week earlier. Regardless of the final result, Tsitsipas will head into Roland Garros as the sixth seed.

In the pair’s only clash to-date, Wawrinka won last year back in Roland Garros, but it went all the way to 8-6 in the fifth set before the Swiss star could claim the win. If Wawrinka can get the job done, he would move inside the top 10 in the world, whilst Tsitsipas will remain at sixth regardless of the result.

GENEVA SEMI-FINALS RESULTS:

[4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) defeated [1] Alexander Zverev (GER) 6-3 7-5
[2] Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) defeated [3] David Goffin (BEL) 7-5 6-2

In Lyon, the top two players at the event have made their way into the final in a fitting conclusion to the event. Top seed Gael Monfils will have crowd support in the Lyon Open final when he takes on second seed Argentinian Diego Schwartzman for the title.

Monfils booked his spot in the final with a hard-fought three-set win over sixth seed Matteo Berrettini. The Frenchman held on in the first set to grind out a 7-5 win, before the Italian hit back to level the match at a set apiece thanks to two breaks to one. Monfils got it back on his terms in the decider, winning 7-5 3-6 6-4 in two hours and 29 minutes.

His opponent Schwartzman had a much tougher time early, looking nowhere near the pace against the red-hot Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Georgian has already claimed two titles this year, and he looked destined to reach yet another final after destroying Schwartzman in the first set, 6-1 in just 29 minutes. The Argentinian refused to throw in the towel and fought back, providing his mettle by winning 12 of the next 14 games to triumph 1-6 6-2 6-2 and earn a finals spot against Monfils.

The pair has met four times in their careers, with an even 2-2 split in the head-to-head stakes. Schwartzman won their most recent meeting in Vienna last year, but Monfils has finally found the form he has been searching for in 2020.

[2] Diego Schwartzman (ARG) defeated [5] Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) 1-6 6-2 6-2
