2020 ATP Geneva Open fantasy tennis: Wawrinka claims home crown

IT was a Swiss celebration in Geneva as home nation hero Stan Wawrinka gave the people what they wanted in the 2020 ATP fantasy tennis final. Facing off against the higher ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas, Wawrinka had the crowd on his side as he won 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 36 minutes to celebrate another title and remain in some serious form ahead of Roland Garros.

Just a week earlier Wawrinka made it through to the semi-finals at Rome to catapult him up the rankings and now the Swiss star is into the top 10 with a handy win in his home country. Whilst Tsitsipas might not have had anything to gain other than some ranking points and another title, the Greek talent will be disappointed he could not capitalise more on his chances throughout the contest.

The match was an equal balance of power and skill on show, as Stan the Man gained a couple of breaks on his younger opponent much to the delight of the Geneva crowd. It continued Wawrinka’s unbeaten head-to-head against Tsitsipas, albeit from just two matches of data. Now the pair head to Roland Garros ranked inside the top 10.

Tsitsipas will be seeded sixth for the French Grand Slam, whilst Wawrinka will come in at number 10 and eye off an even higher ranking with a good run in Paris. Whilst he will have his work cut out for him there, he has shown to hit his straps at the right time just prior to heading to the second Grand Slam of the year.

GENEVA FINAL RESULT:

[4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) defeated [2] Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) 6-4 6-3
