2020 ATP Houston Open fantasy tennis: Day of one-sided contests

IT was a day of one-sided contests at the ATP Tour’s Houston Open fantasy tennis tournament with all four matches being won in straight sets. Only one match saw a set beyond 6-3 as the first two quarter finals were decided following the results. In a half that was opened up following three seeded players bowing out on day one, it is well and truly open now for a run to the final in the bottom half.

Fifth seed German, Jan-Lennard Struff survived somewhat of a fight from returning South African wildcard, Kevin Anderson. The top 30 player won 6-3 6-3 in about an hour and a half to book a spot in the last eight. As the highest ranked player in the bottom half of the draw, Struff would fancy his chances to go deep in the tournament.

The blockbuster match between Great Britain’s Andy Murray and France’s Jeremy Chardy turned into a fizzer with Murray winning in a complete obliteration. The world number 101 took his 63rd ranked opponent to town on the night, running away a 6-1 6-0 winner in 43 minutes. It was a huge message to the rest of the competition as he looks to win his first tournament back since retirement following an impressive run at Miami.

In the other two games, Italian Lorenzo Sonego and American, Sam Querrey both advanced through to the quarter finals with impressive wins. Sonego got the better of Spanish qualifier, Marcel Granollers to win the last seven games of the match and run away a 6-4 6-0 victor. It meant Sonego now takes on Struff in the quarter finals. Querrey was able to account for Slovenian, Alijaz Bedene 6-3 6-1 in 82 minutes, booking a date with Murray in the last eight in what is anticipated to be a fantastic clash.

In tomorrow’s action, third seed Serbian, Dusan Lajovic takes on up-and-coming Swede, Mikael Ymer in the match of the day. Other seeds in action are sixth seed Georgian, Nikoloz Basilashvili who faces Croatian Borna Coric, while Norway’s Casper Ruud locks horns with United States’ Reilly Opelka. In the final match of the day, Serbia’s Laslo Djere will look to back up his upset win over Russian number one seed, Karen Khachanov when he goes head-to-head with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas.
