2020 ATP Hungarian Open fantasy tennis: Gulbis upsets Cilic as Krajinovic advances
A MIXED bag of results occurred on day three of the ATP Hungarian Open fantasy tennis tournament with two of the four seeds making it through to the quarter finals, while the other two fell.
One of the tournament favourites in second seed, Filip Krajinovic made his way through to the last eight with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Italian young gun, Jannik Sinner. It was a much easier win than many might have expected against last year’s Next Gen Finals winner, but Krajinovic showed why he won his maiden tournament two starts ago and is keen to continue that form in Budapest.
Krajinovic now comes up against another rising star in American, Brandon Nakashima. The teenage talent stunned French veteran, Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-3 6-3. An unlikely quarter finalist, Nakashima has shown great promise in his debut season on tour.
Also through to the quarter finals were Australian John Millman and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis. Millman is flying the flag for his nation after four compatriots all fell in the first round, and his run continued with a relatively straightforward 6-2 6-2 victory over Serbia’s Laslo Djere. He now faces Gulbis in the last eight who toppled fourth seed Marin Cilic in a huge upset. Dropping the second set, Gulbis recovered to post a win in two hours and 45 minutes against the Croatian who had a bye in the opening round, downing him 7-5 1-6 6-2.
In completing the Round of 16 tomorrow, Matteo Berrettini – the reigning champion – takes on former top 10 player Kevin Anderson in a blockbuster match, with red-hot Nikoloz Basilashvili – the third seed – taking on Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in an equally high stakes encounter for a spot in the semi-finals.
