2020 ATP Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Fognini survives scare as seeds advance to last 32

IT was eerily similar to the third day of action, with only two more unseeded players making it through to the Round of 32. That meant five of the 32 Indian Wells combatants are unseeded, as the top stars of the ATP Tour made their way through. There were no problems for top six seeds, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev who pushed aside Kyle Edmund, John Millman and Dominik Koepfer respectively. It was more challenging for the likes of Fabio Fognini after the 10th seed had to fight back from a set all and a break down in the third to win 6-3 4-6 6-4 against Australian, Jordan Thompson.

Karen Khachanov took a set to get going against the talented Jannik Sinner, but the Russian finally managed to click in the second set, winning nine of the next 10 games to win it 6-1 and go 3-0 up and hold from there to record a strong 5-7 6-1 6-4 victory over the teenager. The lower three seeds in the half also had tough times against their respective opponents as Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili saved a match point against in the second set to win nine of the last 11 games and run out a 6-7 7-5 6-2 winner against Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis. Serbian Filip Krajinovic can now prepare for his almighty battle with compatriot Djokovic after defeated Vasek Pospisil in a two-hour and 45-minute saga, 3-6 6-4 6-4. There were only five breaks for the match, but Krajinovic made it count in the last two sets. Jan-Lennard Struff also got through in a battle against French veteran, Gilles Simon 6-3 6-7 6-4 in the longest match of the round lasting just over three hours.

From an unseeded point of view, Romanian Radu Albot and Hungarian Marton Fucsovics both booked spots in the Round of 32 after victories over 21st seed Frenchman, Benoit Paire and 25th seed Australian, Alex de Minaur respectively. It was a bad day for Australia with Millman, de Minaur, Thompson and James Duckworth all exiting meaning no Australians are left in the draw. Other winners on the day were Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, United States’ John Isner and Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta.

Looking ahead to day five and the first day of the Round of 32, there are eight big matches to keep an eye on with number two seed Rafael Nadal going up against the big Canadian, Milos Raonic. Reigning champion Dominic Thiem takes on German Philipp Kohlschreiber, while fifth seed Greek star, Stefanos Tsitsipas faces 31st seed Croatian, Borna Coric.
