2020 ATP Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Medvedev survives match points to outlast Schwartzman

IN an otherwise straightforward day of results, Daniil Medvedev had the most to worry about in the final match of the Round of 16. Trailing 4-6 and then 3-6 in the second set tiebreaker, the third seed Russian had to survive some tense moments in order to overcome a dogged Diego Schwartzman. The 12th seed Argentinian was up for the fight against his higher ranked opponent, and it looked like he had caused a huge boilover to advance through to the quarter finals. Medvedev had other ideas however, breaking in the fifth game of the final set to hold on and win, 4-6 7-6 6-3.

The Russian top five player will now faced 10th seed, Fabio Fognini in the quarter finals. Fognini won bragging rights against compatriot, Matteo Berrettini in the match before Medvedev and Schwartzman, defeating the world number eight, 6-3 6-2. The match lasted around an hour and 42 minutes as both players traded winners, but also had a high amount of unforced errors. A couple of breaks in each set were enough for Fognini to get the chocolates though and move through to the final eight.

It was much closer in the battle of the up-and-comers between 19-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime and German talent, Alexander Zverev. The sixth seed headed into the match as a strong favourite, but it was the Canadian who turned heads with his no-fear approach to his tennis. Drilling a massive 37 winners in the first set, the Canadian claimed the set, 6-4 and then took an early lead in the second. Zverev fought back to level the set and the players headed into a tiebreaker. A see-sawing second set tiebreaker was as entertaining as the rest of the match, though it was Auger-Aliassime who emerged victorious, winning 7-5 to book a spot in the semis with the 6-4 7-6 triumph.

He now faces world number one Novak Djokovic who shook off his three-set win over compatriot Filip Krajinovic in the third round to completely dismantle Stan Wawrinka. The first set was fairly close with Djokovic gaining the extra break and never looking like being broken, but he had seen enough by the second set, destroying the Swiss star, upping the pressure and breaking him three consecutive times to win 6-4 6-0 in an hour and 18 minutes.

Both the quarter finals will take place following the other two quarter finals between Dominic Thiem and Roberto Bautista Agut, and Rafael Nadal and Cristian Garin.
