2020 ATP Madrid Masters fantasy tennis: Come-from-behind wins the day one highlight
THERE were come-from-behind wins and one-sided beltings on day one of the 2020 ATP Madrid Open as the first Round of 64 results were completed. Three of the four seeds advanced to the next round, while a couple of qualifiers and a wildcard also enjoyed first round wins.
The match of the day belonged to Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic who had to come from a set down to post a win over Swedish up and comer Mikael Ymer. Lajovic won 5-7 6-2 6-2 against the qualifier, whilst South African wildcard Kevin Anderson continued his strong form this year with an equally impressive come-from-behind 4-6 6-2 6-2 win over Norwegian Casper Ruud. While most of the matches were straight sets, British qualifier Andy Murray had to take three to knock off German Jan-Lennard Struff, eventually getting the chocolates 6-2 2-6 6-2.
From a seeded perspective, three of the four seeds advanced through with Belgian David Goffin, Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili and Swiss talent Stan Wawrinka all booking their spots in the second round. Canadian Milos Raonic spoiled the party for 12th seed Russian Andrey Rublev with a 6-4 6-4 triumph to be the only unseeded winner over a seeded player.
In other results, Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic got up in a smashing 6-1 6-0 victory over Hubert Hurkacz, while Japan’s Kei Nishikori enjoyed an equally big win over Australian John Millman. Also on the winners list for the opening day was Croatian Borna Coric – with a 7-5 6-2 victory over American John Isner – Chilean Cristian Garin – with a win over Canadian Denis Shapovalov – and German qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber – with a win over Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.
In day two action, ninth seed Gael Monfils will be hoping to overcome a loss to Richard Gasquet at the last tournament when they face off, while Italian up and comer Marco Berrettini will be looking to bounce back from poor recent form.
