2020 ATP Marrakech Open fantasy tennis: Delbonis the wildcard as top eight hopes advance
FEDERICO Delbonis is the sole unseeded player in the quarter finals after the three remaining matches at the Marrakech Open were taken out by seeded players. Delbonis knocked off third seed, Benoit Paire in the opening round of the ATP Tour fantasy tennis tournament, and faced unseeded Spaniard, Pablo Andujar in the Round of 16.
After a sluggish start that saw his opponent snatch the first set easily, Delbonis bounced back to win a vital break late in the second set and build on momentum with six of the final seven games to take out the match, 1-6 6-4 6-1. He now faces fifth seed, Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic in the last eight.
Krajinovic won through to the quarter finals after a nail-biting 6-4 7-6 victory over Hungarian, Marton Fucsovics. It might not have been a three-set clash, but the match could have gone either way with Krajinovic showing his experience and tennis nous to just stand up in the big moments. Fucsovics forced a break off him in the first set, but the Serbian broke back, and then broke a second time to take the set 6-4, before neither player could take an advantage in the second set. Eventually it went to a tiebreaker and it was the fifth seed who stepped up, winning it 7-4 and advancing through to the next round.
In the other quarter of the draw, number one seed, Alexander Zverev booked a spot in the last eight with a strong win over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The German world number seven and tournament favourite proved too strong for his opponent in the opening set, trouncing him 6-1 in just 30 minutes. It was a lot closer after that however, as Ramos-Vinolas went toe-for-toe with his younger opponent to force an extra couple of games out of Zverev. The number one seed took it up a notch to break his opponent in the final game of the match and earn a place in the quarter finals.
In the last match, eighth seed Kyle Edmund made his way into the next round with a 6-1 6-4 victory over German, Philipp Kohlscreiber. Edmund knew he had his work cut out for him against the tricky Kohlschreiber, but he really brought his A-game with a superb first set. Edmund won that 6-1 and then broke early in the second to set up a 6-1 6-4 win.
The quarter finals take place tomorrow with Fabio Fognini and Marin Cilic up first on centre court, followed by Guido Pella and Pablo Carreno Busta. In the night games, Krajinovic takes on Delbonis before Zverev and Edmund lock horns in the anticipated match of the day.
