2020 ATP Miami Open fantasy tennis: Pospisil reaches last four as top two advance
CANADIAN wildcard, Vasek Pospisil has reached the semi-finals of the 2020 Miami Open fantasy tennis tournament, the only player outside the top 10 to do so. Pospisil joined top two seeds, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and sixth seeded Alexander Zverev in the last four of the tournament after the quartet all had impressive wins.
Pospisil triumphed in a come-from-behind victory over Australian, Alex de Minaur. He dropped the first set in a tight one 6-4, before bouncing back to win both tiebreakers in the second and third sets. The match lasted a little over three hours to be the clear longest match of the day, and one of the longest in the tournament thus far. Currently ranked 93rd in the world, the run to the semi-finals has seen the Canadian boost his stocks up to 52nd, on the verge of entering the top 50.
Zverev had an equally tough encounter against the returning Andy Murray. The German had to fight back from a set down to post a win over the British wildcard and former top five player to win 2-6 6-3 6-3. The match lasted two hours and 48 minutes before the up-and-coming German was announced the winner, and it took an important break in the eighth game of the deciding set to eventually post the win.
The other two results were fairly one-sided with Nadal winning 6-4 6-3 over another Brit in unseeded Kyle Edmund. It lasted all of 82 minutes with the Spaniard breaking five times to two during the match to ensure he claimed the win and took out the quarter final clash.
In Djokovic’s clash with ninth seed Belgian David Goffin, there was nothing that resembled a close contest as the Serbian piled on the pressure and completely obliterated his top 10 opponent in 52 minutes, 6-1 6-0 and sent an ominous warning to his rivals.
The semi-finals take place tomorrow with Nadal and Pospisil taking centre stage first before Djokovic and Zverev clash for the other spot in the Miami Open decider.
