2020 ATP Monte Carlo Masters fantasy tennis: Tsonga books quarters spot as Ramos-Vinolas downs Garin
A COME-from-behind win by French wildcard, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has helped the former Australian Open finalist reach the quarter finals of the 2020 ATP Monte Carlo Masters fantasy tennis tournament. Tsonga joined top seed Novak Djokovic, fifth seed Roger Federer and unseeded Spaniard, Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the final eight at the tournament.
Tsonga’s win was the most impressive of the lot up against fourth seed Russian, Daniil Medvedev. Tsonga fought back from a set down and an early break in the second set to get back on level terms with four consecutive games in the set. The Frenchman continued that form in the last, holding off his higher ranked opponent to win 3-6 6-4 6-3. The win was vital for Tsonga’s ATP Tour ranking, but even more dramatic for Medvedev, with the loss seeing him drop below Federer in the world rankings.
That occurred because Federer showed Kei Nishikori what he was up against in returning to the tour. The Swiss Master returned to his absolute best against the former top five ranked player, with Nishikori in his third match back and Federer in his second with both returning form long injury layoffs. Federer was the clear standout though, blitzing Japan’s top player 6-1 6-2 in an hour and four minutes. He now takes on Tsonga in the quarter finals.
In the other quarter final, Djokovic will take on Ramos-Vinolas after the number one seed took down 14th seed Russian, Karen Khachanov. After a close first set, Djokovic put the foot down and ran away with the contest in 72 minutes to win 6-4 6-0. The unseeded Spaniard had the longest match of all, shaking of clay court specialist, Cristian Garin in three sets, 6-3 6-7 7-6 in a three-and-a-half-hour epic.
Tomorrow marks the quarter finals with Rafael Nadal up against Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem taking on Stefanos Tsitsipas during the day in a quartet of top seven players. At night, Federer and Tsonga will lock horns, before Djokovic takes on Ramos-Vinolas.
