2020 ATP Roland Garros fantasy tennis: Zverev stuns Djokovic to move into semis
ALEXANDER Zverev had claimed a massive scalp in the match of Roland Garros fantasy tennis tournament so far, defeating world number two and second tournament favourite, Novak Djokovic in five sets. The German up and comer had to come from two sets to one down against the Serbian to win 4-6 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-1 in a match that lasted a little over four hours. Zverev joined Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Cristian Garin in the semi-finals.
The German world number seven takes on the third seed and reigning finalist, Thiem in the semi-finals after the Austrian ended the miraculous run of Chilean qualifier, Nicolas Jarry. The Chilean had won seven consecutive matches in Paris, but his run fell short of an almost unbelievable title, going down in the final eight. Thiem went through as expected without too much trouble, winning 6-3 6-2 6-2.
It was better news for Jarry’s compatriot, Garin who won in a strange four-set match. Other than a second set blue where he dropped it 6-2, he only dropped two games in the other three sets to send unseeded Slovenian Aljaz Bedene packing from Roland Garros. He won 6-1 2-6 6-0 6-1 in just over two hours.
In the final match of the day, world number one Nadal made his way through by defeating eighth seed Argentinian Diego Schwartzman in four sets. Schwartzman fought hard to win the second set against the 12-time winner, but was ultimately overwhelmed during the Spaniard’s 6-2 4-6 6-1 6-2 victory.
Nadal now takes on Garin in the night semi-final straight after the clash between Thiem and Zverev, with both winners advancing through to the Roland Garros final. A repeat of the past two French Open finals is still on the cards with both Nadal and Thiem preparing for another encounter.
