2020 ATP Rome Masters fantasy tennis: Teenagers produce big as veterans show class

IT was a mixed bag of results when it came to young and old winners today, as both sides of the spectrum had some impressive wins. Talented teenagers, Thiago Seyboth Wild and Felix Auger-Aliassime moved through to the next round, whilst the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Jeremy Chardy showed they still had plenty left in the tank with some massive one-sided wins.

Chardy produced the upset of the day by downing 12th seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The in-form Frenchman qualified for the main draw and was too good for the young Russian, defeating him 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes. It was even more one-sided for the Swiss star Wawrinka who completely dismantled Hubert Hurkacz in just 50 minutes, 6-1 6-1 to move through to the next round.

Seyboth Wild showed he has a bright future ahead of him by defeating veteran Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco in straight sets 6-4 7-5, while Auger-Aliassime booked a spot in the Round of 32 with a come-from-behind 4-6 6-0 7-5 triumph over Italian clay courter, Marco Cecchinato. In the all-Australian battle, John Millman came out on top 6-2 6-4 over Nick Kyrgios, whilst Reilly Opelka handed the only other Australian in the draw – Thanasi Kokkinakis – a 6-4 7-6 defeat.

In terms of the other seeds, 11th ranked David Goffin moved through with a tight 7-5 7-6 victory over Croatian Borna Coric, whilst 15th seed Russian Karen Khachanov won 6-4 6-0 over Hubert Hurkacz. The day turned out to be a mixed bag for the Americans as well, with Opelka and Taylor Fritz moving through – the latter defeating Brit Daniel Evans in straight sets – whilst John Isner and Frances Tiafoe were sent packing.

Isner lost to Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 30 minutes, whilst qualifier Tiafoe bowed out at the hands of British Grand Slam winner, Andy Murray 6-1 4-6 6-1. The other match was between Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic and Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov with the former earning an upset win in an hour and 24 minutes, downing his opponent 6-4 6-4 to move through to the second round.

The Round of 32 tomorrow sees the top eight seeds enter the fray, including a blockbuster rematch of the Madrid Masters final between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Murray, whilst the losing semi-finalists from that tournament in Garin and Alexander Zverev also take to the court as opposition. Meanwhile the top four players in Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer also enter the Rome Masters for the first time.
