2020 ATP Rome Masters fantasy tennis: Wawrinka wins all-Swiss battle to advance to quarter finals
STAN Wawrinka got one-up on his compatriot rival Roger Federer to advance through to the final eight at the 2020 ATP Rome Masters fantasy tennis tournament. The Swiss talent joined the top three players in the world in the quarter finals, whilst a Grand Slam winner and three title winners from 2020 also made their way into the last eight.
Wawrinka won in a come-from-behind two-hour clash against Federer 4-6 6-4 6-1 to move into the Round of 16, joining eighth seed Diego Schwartzman as the two players to win in three sets on day four of the tournament. Schwartzman ended the run of French qualifier Jeremy Chardy 4-6 6-2 6-1 with an impressive last couple of sets to book a quarter finals spot.
It was one-way traffic for the top two players and tournament favourites as Novak Djokovic destroyed Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-0 6-1, whilst Rafael Nadal’s 6-1 6-3 triumph over 14th seed Italian Matteo Berrettini was not much closer. Third seed Dominic Thiem also won through in straight sets but had a second set challenge from in-form Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili before the Australian got up 6-1 7-6.
In the other results, Madrid Masters finalist Andy Murray moved through to the quarter finals with a 6-1 6-4 victory over David Goffin, whilst a couple of title winners this year also finalised their place in tomorrow’s quarter finals. Filip Krajinovic won 6-2 6-3 over Japan’s Kei Nishikori, whilst Chilean Cristian Garin won 6-3 6-1 in an eye-opening impressive win over fellow clay courter Casper Ruud.
With the quarter finals set, the opening match of the day pits Nadal and Garin up against each other with the Spanish champion well aware of Garin’s potential having lost to him in Madrid. Following that game is Wawrinka taking on Murray before the night sessions sees Djokovic and Schwarzman go head-to-head followed by Thiem and Krajinovic.
