2020 Hungarian Open fantasy tennis preview: Berrettini eyes off back-to-back titles
AS the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Draft Central is extending the fantasy tennis coverage throughout the ATP and WTA seasons to simulate tournaments and see just how they might have gone down. The next instalment in the ATP fantasy tournament is the Hungarian Open with reigning champion Matteo Berrettini back along with Filip Krajinovic hoping to knock him off his perch.
FAVOURITE:
Matteo Berrettini (ITALY)
After taking out the title last year expect Berrettini to want to go back-to-back and take home the trophy once again. With three titles, already to his name, the Italian youngster is an excitement machine on the court with his impressive power on the serve. He comes into the Hungarian as the first seed and has proven to be hard to beat when on clay court making it his title to lose. Currently ranked eighth in the world the Italian is no slouch able to fight his way to victories and most importantly hold his own under pressure.
CONTENDERS
Marin Cilic (CROATIA)
Currently ranked 37th in the world, Cilic will be looking to claim his 19th title and first Hungarian Open. Reaching as high as number three in 2018, the Croatian will be hoping to recapture his dominate form and showcase his array of talents. Cilic bowed out early in 2019 going down to Pablo Cuevas in the Round of 16 something he will be hoping to rectify this time around.
Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEORGIA)
After making it to the quarter finals in 2019, Basilashvili will be looking to go a couple of steps further and really assert himself as a competitor at the Hungarian Open. The 28-year-old has won three titles throughout his career and will once again be hoping to add to it in this tournament. Although hard court is his preferred surface, Basilashvili has showcased that he is no slouch on the clay surface able to move across the court nicely and dish up impressive shots.
Filip Krajinovic (SERBIA)
After falling short in the final game of the Open, Krajinovic is back for vengeance in 2020. He proved that he has the firepower to blaze past opponents taking care of Pierre Hugues-Herbert and Borna Coric on his way to the end game. With the loss, still fresh in his memory expect him to plenty of fire in the belly to make amends for his short comings last year. Krajinovic is yet to win a title meaning this could quite possibly be his first if he plays his cards right. The Serbian tennis player currently sits at 32 in the world and would be desperate to climb back up the rankings after reaching as high as 26 in early 2018.
Roughie:
John Millman (AUSTRALIA)
The Australian is renowned for his endurance and never give-up mentality, constantly pushing players to their wits end with his crafty shot selection. At 30-years-old it is fair to say that Millman is towards the tail end of his career but still has plenty left in the tank. Ranked at 43 in the world, Millman is no slouch on the tennis court, able to cover it well and deliver the unthinkable every now and then. He has reached as high as 33 and will be keen to emulate that hot form once again to shoot but up the rankings.
DARK HORSE:
Laslo Djere (SERBIA)
Djere impressed last year at the Hungarian Open despite going down to eventual winner, Berrettini in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old Serbian did not skip a beat displaying his competitive spirit and knocking over the likes of Basilashvili on the way. Last year also proved to be a coming of age, year for the Serbian, winning his maiden title in Rio de Janeiro. With his first taste of success, expect that hunger to build for Djere and for the young up and coming player to throw everything he has at the Hungarian Open to claim another victory.
