2020 WTA Indian Wells fantasy tennis: Seeds advance in day of one-sided results

THERE are no remaining unseeded players left in the WTA Tour’s Indian Wells fantasy tennis tournament after the sixth day of play. The remaining four unseeded players in the draw were bundled out by seeds in straight sets. It was the tone of the day for the tournament, with just one match going to three sets as each of the other seven winners advanced through to the Round of 16 without too many problems.

The tightest win was 24th seed Russian, Ekaterina Alexandrova who had to survive a momentum-swinging comeback from 16th seed Czech, Marketa Vondrousova on the Russian’s way to a 6-1 3-6 6-2 triumph. The match lasted an hour and 47 minutes with the in-form player continuing her rise up the rankings with an impressive win. She looked easily on top in the first set with a 6-1 lead, but a crucial break midway through the second term saw Vondrousova win four consecutive games across the sets to take out the second. Alexandrova picked up when it counted however, winning the last four games of the match to salute and set up a clash with world number one, Ash Barty.

Barty got through unscathed against Italian, Camila Giorgi 6-3 6-3, as did fellow top 10 picks, Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic. They all advanced through to the final 16 courtesy of straight sets wins over Americans. Svitolina downed Lauren Davis 6-1 6-4, Bertens took out Jessica Pegula 6-1 7-5, and Bencic had the most impressive win of all, breezing past 25th seed, Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-2 in 47 minutes. Unfortunately for the United States, Venus Williams also fell at the Round of 32, going down to Croatian 21st seed, Donna Vekic 6-3 6-3.

In other results, there were some upsets in the top half of the draw aside from Barty. While Alexandrova was the first underdog to win in that half, Maria Sakkari took down 12th seed Brit, Johanna Konta in straight sets, 6-4 7-5. Australian Open runner-up Garbine Muguruza had no troubles defeating Karolina Muchova from Czech Republic in a 6-1 6-3 match that lasted 58 minutes.

The Round of 16 commences tomorrow with four matches, led by top five players, Karolina Pliskova and Sofia Kenin. They take on Belgian Elise Mertens and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka respectively, while in the other clashes, seventh seed Serena Williams takes on young gun, Dayana Yastremska and eighth seed Naomi Osaka meets another young star in Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
