2020 WTA Nature Valley Open / ATP Stuttgart Open fantasy tennis: Garcia goes back-to-back as Medvedev wins Stuttgart title

CAROLINE Garcia has gone back-to-back in Nottingham, while Daniil Medvedev has enjoyed a triumph at Stuttgart to round out the week of fantasy tennis competitions. The French talent has not had a consistent year this year, but she backed up last year’s 2019 victory with a 2020 trophy.

Taking on the top seed and tournament favourite Petra Kvitova, Garcia saved her best until last, breaking her opponent three times throughout the match whilst holding her own serve every time. It enabled the world number 80 to win 6-3 6-3. Whilst she will not move in the rankings due to just defending her points, the victory gives Garcia great confidence heading into future grass court events. The victory was her eighth career title and her first since her Nottingham victory 12 months ago.

Meanwhile in Germany, Medvedev had to fight tooth and nail to overcome a determined John Isner. Weathering the serving storm, the world number five got up 6-3 6-7 7-5 to earn the title. Despite sitting 26 places higher in the ATP World Rankings, Medvedev never had it his own way, and had it not been for a fortuitous break in the first set – off Isner’s only double fault of the match – then he might have settled for runner-up this time around.

Instead, he got the set, and whilst Isner fought back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, Medvedev ramped up the pressure in the decider. It proved fruitful as he won in three sets in two hours and 46 minutes. The victory meant he gained the fourth spot in the world back off Alexander Zverev. Like Garcia, it is also Medvedev’s eighth career title.
