2020 WTA Rabat Grand Prix fantasy tennis preview: Konta aims to go one better

AS the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Draft Central is extending the fantasy tennis coverage throughout the ATP and WTA seasons to simulate tournaments and see just how they might have gone down. The next WTA tournament lined up is the Rabat Grand Prix with a plethora of exciting matches.

FAVOURITE:

Johanna Konta (GBR)

The 29-year-old British star fell agonisingly short in the final of the 2019 Morocco Open and will be out for vengeance. Coming into the tournament as the number one seed, Konta is not one to take lightly with the right-handed star able to deliver some impressive shots and cover the court well. Konta is a threat to be reckoned with on the court and will be hoping to showcase her talent in a relatively strong pool of opponents.

CONTENDERS:

Elise Mertens (BEL)

The number two seed will be hoping to progress through to the final stages of the tournament and prove herself to the rest of the tennis community. The Belgian 24-year-old made it to the quarter finals last year and will be wanting to go one better this year. Coming in as the second seed for the tournament she is well poised as a serious contender with the right hander able to dish up some strong serves and cover the court well.

Maria Sakkari (GRE)

With a Moroccan Open win under her belt, expect Sakkari to look to add to her trophy cabinet. The Greek star showcased her skill on clay court to bypass a wealth of competitors last year and reign supreme in three sets, in fact coming back from one set down such is her skill and determination. Sakkari has been in strong form in recent weeks, progressing through to the Round of 32 in the Italian Open before Ash Barty put a stop to her hot run. At 24, Sakkari still has plenty of development left in her and ranking at 20 in the world has the ability to rise up the rankings with a strong showing.

Alison Riske (USA)

Ranked at 19 in the world and the fourth seed heading into the tournament the American will be hoping to make a splash at the Rabat Grand Prix and push her case as a serious contender. Riske did not compete in the tournament last year meaning she has no points to protect. Her inconsistent form will be something she hopes to address after being knocked out in the Round of 64 in the Italian Open.

ROUGHIE:

Angelique Kerber

Sitting just outside the seeded players the 32-year-old German knows what it takes to win a title with 12 to her name. The former number one is still a dominant threat on court with her ability to cover the court and land devastating blows thanks to her strength and vision. Kerber, currently ranked at 21 is no easy beat and will be eager to prove her worth in a group filled with up and coming stars. Arguably one of the more experienced players in the group, expect Kerber to draw on her experience to think her way through trouble and stand up under pressure.

DARKHORSE:

Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS)

The 27-year-old showcased her smarts and ability to make it to the semi-finals last year before going down to Konta in two sets. The Croatian born, Aussie tennis star, stunned many with her grit and determination and will be hoping to replicate that form once again at the Rabat Grand Prix. Currently ranked 56th in the world and outside the seeded players heading into the tournament Tomljanovic will be eager to prove she is no easy beat and take it to the rest of the players.
