2020 WTA Roland Garros fantasy tennis: Day 2 proves interesting with quality matchups

DAY 2 of the Roland Garros fantasy saw a couple of interesting matchups, with a few seeds falling to lower ranked opposition and some quality talent unlucky to fall given their solid form on the clay coming into the tournament.

With seven competitors from the United States taking the court on day two, the wins outweighed the losses making for a solid day on the court for the nation. Wildcard Ann Li was unlucky to draw Serena Williams, going down in straight sets to the champion veteran, with that match the only one between two American compatriots. Sixteenth seed Madison Keys also had a fairly straightforward win, while Venus Williams and Coco Vandeweghe also joined the winners list. Taylor Townsend drew Karolina Pliskova in the first round and put in a tough effort against the Czech, going down 6-1 6-4, while Lauren Davis took Nina Stojanovic to two tiebreakers but could not find a winning set in there.

Just the two seeds lost on day two, with Czech Marketa Vondrousova and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova both dropping to lower ranked opposition in Julia Goerges and Camila Giorgi, though second seed Elina Svitolina and 20-plus seeded Maria Sakkari and Magda Linette all came in hot to head into the next round, with Svitolina and Sakkari dominating their contests.

Wildcard Tessah Andrianjafitrimo was too good when it came to a battle against Lin Zhu, while Timea Babos had a difficult encounter with Russian, Liudmila Samsonova, before reigning supreme thanks to a spectacular couple of points to finish strong, 7-6 7-5. A couple of three setters rounded out an overall slow day at the Roland Garros, with Laura Siegemund joining her German compatriot Goerges in the Round of 64, defeating Romanian Ana Bogdan in a tight matchup 4-6 6-4 6-4.

However, her two compatriots in Sorana Cirstea and Irina Camelia Begu both made it through in tough battles, with Begu overcoming a strong Kristyna Pliskova and Cirstea coming from a set down to dominate the second and third sets against Shuai Zhang.
