2020 WTA Stuttgart fantasy tennis: Muguruza wins eighth title

THE 2020 Stuttgart fantasy tournament finished with a bang, with sixth seed Spaniard Garbine Muguruza winning the tournament with a three-set victory over Elina Svitolina in the final.

It was a strong start from the Ukrainian fourth seed, pulling out all the stops early to put herself in a solid position coming into the second set, winning the first with ease 6-1 and forcing errors from the usually clinical Muguruza. Muguruza was on the back foot, unable to compete with the Ukrainian’s constant pressure but worked her way into the match with a stellar comeback in the second, coming from three games down to win the second set tiebreaker, 7-6. Muguruza’s form continued in the third, taking control at an earlier stage to be on the attack and turn the tables on Svitolina, eventually taking the title out, 1-6 7-6 6-4.

Muguruza may have had a rough start but was clinical in the second half of the match, winning off her serve majority of the time and putting Svitolina on the back foot with her constant pressing play across the court. While Svitolina dictated the first set, Muguruza took control for the victory, winning her eighth tournament and first on clay.

STUTTGART FINAL RESULT:

[6] Garbine Muguruza (ESP) defeated [4] Elina Svitolina (UKR) 1-6 7-6 6-4
