2020 WTA Volvo Car Open: Seeds drop as lower ranks turn the tables
IT took impressive performances across the board in the second half of the WTA Volvo Car Open draw to head into the quarter finals, with just the one predicted victory coming out of the day.
World number one Ash Barty was the only seed to head through to the next round, and never once looked like losing against her 16th seed opposition in Johanna Konta. She sent a threatening message to the rest of the tournament as she ran home victor 6-2 6-1. Konta seemed on the back foot from the get-go, failing to bring the intensity required to bring the Australian to like and went down in just over an hour. Taking on Barty in the second round is Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, who has now defeated two seeds on the trot with this solid win over Elina Svitolina sure to give her a wealth of confidence. Mladenovic held off a fast start from Svitolina, winning the first set from three games down before holding serve in the second.
Both Round of 32 giant killers in Monica Puig and Julia Goerges were taken to three sets by their respective opposition, both going down in similar scorelines after stellar first sets to be forced out of the tournament. Puig’s opposition in 20-year-old Dayana Yastremska was clinical in the second and third sets not allowing the wildcard a look in while Marketa Vondrousova almost replicated the victory in her match against Goerges.
The quarter finals begin tomorrow with the second half of the draw bringing the heat. First up is a top 10 seed battle between Karolina Pliskova and Kiki Bertens before Yulia Putintseva takes on Petra Kvitova.
