2022 ATP Cup Greece preview

GREECE will headline a Group D that features three teams with a top star, but little depth, making the 2022 ATP Cup very fascinating. Of those three sides, Greece has the highest ranked number one singles player, though he will have to carry the bulk of the load. One positive is that all bar one player are aged 25 or under.

2022 GREECE TEAM

Stefanos Tsitsipas
Michail Pervolarakis
Petros Tsitsipas
Markos Kalovelonis
Aristotelis Thanos

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the main man who should cruise through the group stage winning each of his three singles. Though his ATP Finals finished abruptly, the Greek star should be good to go at next month’s tournament. Tsitsipas is ranked fourth in the world off the back of another strong year, and is still only 23-years-old. He will hold up his end of the bargain, but will be relying on the rest of his side to cause upsets in order to progress.

Given that Tsitsipas is almost assured of victory, Greece will hope that Pervolarakis can take down a few opponents in the opening matches of the tie. Ranked at a career-high 398th in the world and yet to win an ATP Tour match, it will be an uphill battle. But he will be ranked higher than his Georgian opponent, so could be a good chance there. Argentina looks far too strong, though Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak – ranked just outside the Top 100 – is not out of the realms of possibility for an upset.

Kalovelonis and Petros Tsitsipas both join the top two at the event for a second consecutive year, whilst Thanos makes his debut in 2022. Stefanos’ younger brother is still only 21-years-old and is 2-2 from his ATP Cup matches, ranked 764th in the world. Kalovelonis (851st) and Thanos (893rd) will potentially play doubles, though it is likely that the Tsitsipas brothers will pair up for the natural chemistry. As a whole, Greece has some chance of progressing to the next stage, but Argentina is the raging favourite.

Prediction: 2nd in Group D
