2022 ATP Cup Serbia preview

NUMBER one seeds Serbia will always look damaging with the world’s best player at the helm, and in a group which features an understrength Spain, as well as two weaker depth nations in Norway and Chile, progression should be expected. Serbia is favourite to advance to the final four of the tournament, with really only Spain being the serious threat.

Serbia heads into the 2022 ATP Cup as favourites in Group A, going up against Spain, Norway and Chile. Though the second singles player of either Lajovic or Krajinovic can be inconsistent, the absolute consistency of Djokovic almost guarantees the side will head into doubles with a chance to win the tie. Top doubles talent Cacic performed strongly at the recent Davis Cup tournament, often pairing with Djokovic. The doubles-specialist may be crucial, particularly against the better sides.

The nation is heading for its second ATP Cup title in three years, after winning the inaugural one in 2020. Djokovic, Lajovic and Cacic have all played in both years, with Krajinovic coming back for a second Cup after making his debut last year. Sabanov is yet to make his debut at the tournament, and is ranked inside the Top 100 for doubles, giving Serbia an option in the case where they have cleaned up both singles.

Expect Serbia to survive the group stage and advance through and should cruise through to the final realistically, with Group D being the weakest group of the lot. Though Stefanos Tsitsipas is a talent, the depth is not there, meaning Argentina will likely take full advantage in that group. The big challenge will likely come from Russia in the final, assuming both sides make it, though Italy, Germany and Canada are all threats to be there.
