2022 Australian Open Scoreboard: Day 6

THE Round of 32 was completed yesterday, with the last 16 in each of the men’s and women’s draws decided. The men’s draw saw just one unseeded player advance through – in an all-unseeded clash – but one big upset, hwilst the women’s had some tight contests.

In the men’s draw, Marin Cilic saved the best upset until last, taking down fifth seed Andrey Rublev with some phenomenal tennis.He was one of seven seeds to advance to the net round, with other top 10 seeds, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime all winning. Taylor Fritz had to go the full five sets against Roberto Bautista Agut to get through to the next round, whilst Jannik Sinner won through in four against the last remaining qualifier, Taro Daniel. Alex de Minaur became the last Aussie male remaining after defeating Pablo Andujar, and wildcard Christopher O’Connell fell to United States’ Maximee Cressy.

In the women’s singles, the biggest upset of the day also came at night, with Sorana Cirstea defeating 10th seed Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Elsewhere, Alize Cornet continued her run with a win over 29th seed Tamara Zidansek, whilst Kaia Kanepi was the other unseeded victor, winning against Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis. World number two Aryna Sabalenka came back from a set down for the third straight match, defeating Marketa Vondrousova, whilst other seeded fixtures, Iga Swiatek, Simona Halep, Elise Mertens and Danielle Collins also advancing to the last 16.
