2022 Indian Wells WTA scores: Round of 64

AS part of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 Masters coverage, we’ll be adding the Round of 64 scores all in one place.

PERFECT PAOLINI STUNS SABALENKA

In a major upset on Saturday, Italian Jasmine Paolini managed to come from behind to defeat second seed Aryna Sabalenka. The Italian world number 46 went down 6-2 in the first set, and looked destined to lose her fourth clash against a Top 10 player without winning one. But the 26-year-old dug deep and managed to pull off the upset of the tournament thus far, winning 2-6 6-3 6-3 to win in one hour and 47 minutes to claim the biggest scalp of her career.

“I’m really happy,” Paolini said post-match. “I played an amazing match. I tried to be there, to be focused every point. Yeah, I’m so happy I beat Sabalenka. She’s a great player.

“After the first set, I didn’t expect to win the match, but I tried just to be there every point, to be just right there every point, to not think about the score. The score was 6-2 for her, I wasn’t even close to her. But then point by point I started to believe it. I started to hit better the ball, deeper in the court.”

It is the second time in three meetings Paolini has toppled Sabalenka, having also just entered the Top 50 for the first time in her career post-Australian Open. Now setting her sights on a Top 30 place, the Italian is quickly making ground on her rivals.

ROGERS ROLLS RED-HOT OSTAPENKO

American Shelby Rogers has taken down the red-hot Jelena Ostapenko to reach the third round of Indian Wells. The American – who had not won a WTA Tour singles match since January 5 entering the tournament – has since claimed back-to-back wins. Ostapenko was back to her best of late, particularly on the hard courts, but Rogers had the better of her in a straight sets thriller, 7-5 7-6. The victory marked Rogers’ first over the Latvian in four career meetings.

“I thought I returned very well, I played the big points well when it mattered, and I hit two good forehands in the tiebreak,” Rogers said post-match. “As long as I finish that way, that’s good.”
