Year in review – 2019: Gael Monfils

GAEL Monfils had another busy year competing at a host of tournaments and put his name forward once again as a strong contender after steadily rising up the ranks thanks to solid wins.

Rank: 10
Wins: 37
Losses: 19
Titles: 1
Prize money: $2,901,347

Monfils maintained his title winning consistency throughout 2019 securing the Rotterdam title to prove he still has what it takes to match it with the best of them. The Frenchman progressively moved up the ladder after being as low as 32 at the start of the year highlighting his skill, grit and determination to work his way up the order. He played a crucial role during the Davis Cup and despite being ready to play Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open bowed out unable to take the court. But he showcased he still has the toolkit and capabilities to topple over opponents such as the 13th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Frenchman was plagued with inconsistency throughout the year stringing together strong performances and then falling off the pace making it hard to really build any rhythm. However, Monfils did make his way to the quarter finals at the US Open but stumbled against Matteo Berrettini while history repeated itself in the ATP Finals in Paris falling short against 28 seed Denis Shapovalov. Despite the losses, Monfils built into the year to become a thorn in many opponent’s side credit to his strong serves and swift movement across the court. At 33-years-old the best years may be behind him but he still has plenty of X-factor about him able to deliver and win 72 per cent of his first serve points.
