In an incredibly quick day of action at Dubai Tennis Championships, just one match was played for the women’s singles, and another was a walkover. Veronika Kudermetova earned an easy path into the Dubai Tennis Championships decider with a free pass against Czech qualifier Marketa Vondrousova, who retired prior to the match due to a right adductor injury.
Now the world number 31 will take on former Top 5 player Jelena Ostapenko who will force her way back into the Top 20 with the run, having come back from a disappointing first set, and nail-biting second set to run away with the match against Simona Halep. Ostapenko won 2-6 7-6 6-0, winning not only the last six games of the match, but came off a 7-0 second set tiebreak.
Ostapenko moved into her eleventh career WTA Tour final, having won at Eastbourne last year as her most recent success. For Halep, the two-time winner at the event, it was so near but so far, bowing out without reaching the decider as the Latvian hit 27 winners to 20 unforced errors in the last two sets, after hitting nine and 29 in a shocking first set.
“I knew I have to play aggressive no matter what the score is,” Ostapenko said post-match “She really doesn’t like to play against players who are playing aggressive and take time away from her.
“[At first] my legs were, like, standing. They were not moving in the first set. That’s why I was missing. When I changed that, everything changed. I don’t think I really needed Plan B for this match. I think Plan A had to work well, and that’s what happened the second and third sets.”
