Elena Rybakina has created history, becoming the first Grand Slam champion from Kazakhstan after she defeated Ons Jabeur to win the 2022 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles title.

The Tunisian actually won the first set 6-3, before Rybakina came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to take the title.

Both players served the same number of aces (4) but it was Rybakina who served more double faults.

Rybakina hit more winners but also more unforced errors then Jabeur.

Rybakina had a higher percentage of her first serves go in and had a higher percentage of wins off her second serve, but Jabeur had the higher percentage of wins off her first serve.

The champion was cool, calm and collected post match, but eventually the emotions did start to flow.

“I’m speechless because I was super nervous before the match, during the match and I’m honestly happy that it finished. I’ve never felt something like this” Rybakina said.

“I didn’t expect I would be in the second week at Wimbledon. To be a winner, it’s just amazing. I don’t have words to say how happy I am.”

When asked about how her parents (who could not attend the final) would say to her when she finally got to see them, her answer was short and sweet.

“Probably they’re going to be super proud,” she said before the tears started to flow.

Despite the loss, Jabeur was surprisingly upbeat post match.

“I’m definitely positive about it,” she said. “That’s tennis. There is only one winner. I gave it all today. I was telling myself ‘This is not over, I trust you’. I even said ‘I love you’ to myself. I wanted that title really bad. Maybe because I want it too much, I didn’t have it.

“It wasn’t meant to be. She played really well. She really deserved to win. This is tennis, and it’s part of it. I have to learn from it. But I’m very, very positive about it.

“It’s a great first experience [in a Grand Slam final] for me. I don’t regret anything.”
