FINNISH rising talent Emil Ruusuvuori has taken down third seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets to kick off his Hamburg campaign at the ATP 500 event. The 22-year-old was able to upset the third seed with a 7-4 6-4 victory to be one of three victors over seeded players at the event.
Ruusuvuori broke four times to two during the match, and scrapped well to win 55 per cent of his second serve points compared to Schwartzman’s 35 per cent. Both players were consistent from a first serve percentage (69 per cent), but the usually unflappable Schwartzman still produced eight double faults. The Finn will take on Italian young gun Lorenzo Musetti in the Round of 16.
There were some big upsets and almost-upsets at the sole 500 event across yesterday, with top seed Carlos Alcaraz surviving an almighty scare against German wildcard Nicola Kuhn. With the home crowd behind him, Kuhn took it up to the clay court start, winning the first set and taking Alcaraz to a third set tiebreaker before falling 7-3 in that tiebreaker.
The other seed to advance through to the Round of 16 was fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who had a much easier time against Italian qualifier Luca Nardi, winning 6-2 6-1. In other results, Aslan Karatsev and Tallon Griekspoor both knocked off seeded players Nikoloz Basilashvili and Holger Rune, while the newest ATP Tour title winner Francisco Cerundolo fought past German Daniel Altmaier, and Italian Fabio Fognini picked up his 400th ATP Tour win with victory over Aljaz Bedene in three sets.
In the women’s event, Czech doubles partners Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova both won their respective Round 16 matches at Hamburg. Third seed Krejcikova defeated Poland’s Magdalena Frech, while Siniakova advanced thanks to a win over Laura Pigossi. Eighth seed German Andrea Petkovic also made a quarter final courtesy of a victory over Misaki Doi. Completing the Round of 32 matches, top seed Anett Kontaveit booked her spot in the Round of 16, while in-form Serbian Aleksandra Krunic backed up her final last week with a win over German veteran Sabine Lisicki. Bernarda Pera and Swiss qualifier Joanne Zuger were the other first round winners.
Meanwhile the first round matches at both the WTA Tour’s Palermo Ladies Open and the ATP Tour’s Swiss Open in Gstaad were completed. Among the victors were fifth seed Caroline Garcia and seventh seed Anna Bondar, whilst second seed Yulia Putintseva comfortably took care of Australian lucky loser Jaimee Fourlis. In the men’s event, Austrian Dominic Thiem was too good for seventh seed Hugo Gaston in three sets, whilst German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann won against sixth seed Cristian Garin in straight sets, 6-3 6-4 to advance to the second round.
