IT was an ace day for the Australians in Adelaide, as multiple Aussies picked up wins.

One of those was Jordan Thompson, who fresh off the back of his win against Rafael Nadal last week defeated Facundo Diaz Acosta.

In just under an hour and a half, the Australian defeated the Argentinian 6-2 6-2.

It was not a match littered with aces, but Diaz Acosta had significantly more double faults, but still managed to have a slightly higher first serve percentage than Thompson.

Where Thompson really had Diaz Acosta on the ropes was the first serve points won percentage, which was almost 40% higher for Thompson. Diaz Acosta also had significantly more unforced errors than Thompson did, to the tune of three times as many.

Thompson’s next opponent is Italian fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who got to enjoy a bye in the first round.

Thompson was not the only Aussie to pick up a win, with Alex Bolt and Christopher O’Connell also picking up straight sets wins.

It was not a good day for all the Australians though, with Rinky Hijikata, James McCabe and Adam Walton all losing.

Meanwhile in Auckland Denis Shapovalov’s return to the court did not quite go to plan, going down to seventh seed Sebastian Ofner in straight sets 6-4 6-2.

It was a rough return to the court for the Canadian, with Shapovalov serving 22 double faults compared to Ofner’s two.

The Austrian also beat Shapovalov in several other areas, including first serve percentage (65% compared to 49%), and first and second serve points won.

Ofner will now play Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, who beat countryman Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.

Meanwhile the positive day for the Australians stretched across the ditch with Max Purcell also picking up a win, winning his Trans Tasman clash with Kiwi Kiranpal Pannu.
