Pole of women’s draw advances after battle
DAY three of the 2024 Australian Open saw women’s number one seed Iga Swiatek finally get to get her campaign underway, and she did so in positive fashion over American Sofia Kenin.
It was hard fought at times for the Pole, but she ultimately prevailed in straight sets 77-62, 6-2.
Swiatek finished with the higher aces count but Kenin finished with more double faults.
The pair both had similar first serve in and first serve win percentages, but where Swiatek really dominated was the win off second serve (64% vs 32%). She also record 30 winners compared to Kenin’s 18.
“[I’m] really happy,” Swiatek said post match.
“It wasn’t easy at the beginning to find my rhythm, and I felt a little bit off. Huge respect to her, she won this tournament so she knows what to do.”
“I’m happy that I managed to get my level up in [the] second set,” she said.
“The temperature was higher than any match I played this season. I needed to adjust to that, [as] the balls were a little bit flying out of control.”
It was overall a pretty good day for the seeds, with most of the seeds making it through, including the likes of Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Jelena Ostapenko.
There were still a few upsets, with Lin Zhu and Sorana Cirstea both falling to unseeded opponents.
