KIWI world number 123 Lulu Sun is continuing to create history, this time defeating local hope Emma Raducanu 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to reach the Quarter Finals at Wimbledon for the first time.

Despite Raducanu’s consistency, which saw her finish with only two double faults and 21 unforced errors compared to four and 44 respectively from Sun, it was not enough as the Kiwi dominated at the net to take the win.

Although Raducanu finished with the better first serve in percentage, Sun finished with the higher percentage of points won off both the first and second serve. She also dominated the winners count, winning that 52 to 19.

“I don’t even have the words right now,” said Sun post match, through both tears and laughter, having kept her emotions firmly in check until then.

“It was a great match against her and she really dug deep in there to get the win from me.

“I really had to fight tooth and nail against her because she’s obviously going to run for every ball and fight until the end.”

This has really been the tournament to remember for the 23 year old, who came through qualifying to have now won seven matches in a row to become the first New Zealander to reach this stage of the tournament.

Sun’s next opponent will be Donna Vekic, with the Croatian overcoming a determined Paula Badosa yesterday 6-2, 1-6,  6-4.

One of the big differences between the pair was their abilities to convert break points, with Vekic winning 100% of her opportunities and Badosa only converting 60% of hers.

AROUND THE COURTS

It was a mixed bag of a day for the higher ranked players in the bottom half of the Ladies’ Singles Draw.

Emma Navarro upset second seed and countrywoman Coco Gauff in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, while things were evenly poised at a set all and five all in the third between Jasmine Paolini another American in Madison Keys, before Keys had to retire hurt due to a leg injury.
