THE 32 qualifiers for Monday’s US Open have been confirmed after the third round of matches overnight. Among the 16 women are five Australians, with the one Australian male – Li Tu – causing a huge upset to reach the main draw.
The 28-year-old South Australian took down third seed Jesper De Jong ranked 58 places higher with the Dutchman boasting a career-high 103rd in the world earlier this month. Tu was able to come back from a set down to win 3-6 6-1 7-5 to book his place in the Flushing Meadows main draw.
Tu won 67 and 58 per cent of his first and second serve points, breaking five times to three and critically taking advantage off De Jong’s weaker second serve, winning 14 of 23 points (61 per cent) for the match. After his two compatriots in Marc Polmans and Alex Bolt lost in the second round of qualifying, Tu flew the flag to be the sole Aussie male added to the main draw.
From the women’s draw however, almost one third of qualifiers were Australian, highlighted by teenage star Maya Joint. The 18-year-old stunned local hope and third seed Hayley Baptiste out on Court 17, only dropping 10 points on serve and breaking five times to one during a 6-2 6-1 jaw-dropping demolition.
Joining Joint in the next round were Priscilla Hon – who ground out a three-set win over top seed Kamilla Rakhimova in three sets, 7-6 6-7 6-4 – as well as Arina Rodionova, Destanee Aiava and Kimberly Birrell, all of whom won in three sets. The only Aussie to lose at the final stage of qualification was 20-year-old Talia Gibson who went down to Spanish 12th seed Marina Bassols Ribera, 6-3 6-4.
