Upsets galore as seeds unsewn in Adelaide
IT WAS not a good day for the WTA seeds at the Adelaide International, with only one winning their quarter final match.
One seed that fell was Daria Kasatkina, with the third seed proving no match for Madison Keys.
The American blasted 11 aces to dispose of Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 in less than an hour.
“I don’t think there’s many things that I did wrong tonight,” said Keys, reflecting on the match. “It was just kind of one of those lines and I hit a lot of lines, which doesn’t always happen but I’m very happy with the match today and I’m excited to come back tomorrow.”
Interestingly, although both plyers had pretty similar first serve in percentages, Keys had a much better percentage of points won off her first serve. Keys also did significantly better in saving break points.
It has been a good start to the year for Keys, who came into this tournament off a quarter final run in Auckland.
“I think I played some really good tennis and there were some injuries here and there so I didn’t really get to play a full season,” Keys said. “But I put in a lot of work this off-season and I’m feeling really good starting this season.”
Keys’ next opponent will be Liudmila Samsonova, who beat another seed in Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-4.
The Russian may not have served more aces or less double faults than the American, but crucially did have a higher first serve percentage and won a higher percentage of points off her first serve than Navarro did.
Diana Shnaider also fell yesterday, going down to Yulia Putintseva in a three set epic that took over three hours to finish.
Putintseva now moves on to play Jessica Pegula, who was the only seed to progress yesterday after her opponent, countrywoman Ashlyn Krueger, had to retire from their quarterfinal.
