Seeds continue to be uprooted at Aus Open

AS IS becoming somewhat of a tradition at the Australian Open, the women’s draw is continuing to prove that seeding is nothing more than just a number.

One of the biggest casualties of this from yesterday’s action was fifth seed and 2024 runner-up Qinwen Zheng, who fell to Laura Siegemund in straight sets.

In a hard fought match that ended up lasting over two hours, the German ultimately prevailed 7-6, 6-3.

Although Zheng smashed 11 aces past Siegemund, it counted for little the latter finished with a much better first serve in percentage, and also did better when it came to winning points off her first serve.

Siegemund now has to face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, after she beat countrywoman Anastasia Potapova yesterday.

In a match that lasted almost two and a half hours, Pavlyuchenkova ultimately prevailed 7-6. 2-6, 6-2.

Despite serving more double faults and less aces than her opponent, Pavlyuchenkova still finished with a better percentage of both her first serves in and wins off her first serve.

Zheng was not the only seed to fall yesterday, with Liudmila Samsonova and Karolina Muchova also bowing out. It was not a good day for the Aussies either, with Talia Gibson and Ajla Tomljanovic both being eliminated.
