Andreeva storms home to make Dubai history

TEENAGE star Mirra Andreeva made history overnight as the youngest WTA1000 winner in history after the 17-year-old shook off an early challenge from Denmark’s Clara Tauson to win 7-6 6-1 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final overnight.
The format began in 2009 and Andreeva – aged 17 years and 299 days – broke new group with the victory, which came in consecutive days after fending off Grand Slam winners and Top 5 players Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina in the quarter final and semi-final respectively.
Andreeva hit 32 winners to 18 including six aces, while also only committing 21 unforced errors. She converted four of seven break point chances against the Dane, who luckily for the Russian only served one ace for four double faults.
“I’ve been dreaming of having a press conference with a [WTA 1000] trophy by my side, so finally it happened,” Andreeva said post-match. “But I saw winners drinking a glass of champagne. It’s a pity that I’m still 17.”
Andreeva will enter the Top 10 for the first time, moving up from world number 14 to nine in the rankings to be officially released on Monday. She also becomes the first 17-year-old to be ranked inside the Top 10 since 2007, the year she was born.
The Russian youngster said she hope to ascend even further and reach the Top 5 by year’s end.
“Now when you enter Top 10 and the higher your ranking is, the slower and longer it’s going to take for you to be even higher because the difference in the points is very, very short, very small,” Andreeva said.
“I think it’s going to be hard to enter Top 5. This is the exact goal that I’m going to set for myself, to be Top 5 by the end of the year. I’m very curious if I will be able to achieve it.”
Tauson’s run to the final has seen the Dane shoot up the rankings to 23rd in the world, beating her previous career high of 33rd.
