ATP/WTA Mexico Open: Dimitrov upsets Wawrinka as Xiu, Fernandez continue run

AN AMERICAN will play in the ATP Mexico Open Final following the quarter finals results, while in the WTA Tournament, a couple of teenage qualifiers continued their runs to move into the semi-finals.

Seventh seed Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov took out third seed, Stan Wawrinka in straight sets to set up a semi-final clash with tournament favourite, Rafael Nadal. Dimitrov downed the Swiss star 6-4 6-4 in an hour and 24 minutes, winning 72 per cent of his first serve points from 70 per cent efficiency, while saving three of a possible four break points. The seventh seed also broke three times and dominated Wawrinka’s second serve, winning 67 per cent of the Swiss talent’s serve. Now he has to step up further to take on the Spanish start, with Nadal holding a remarkable 12-1 head-to-head record against the Bulgarian.

Nadal knocked off South Korean, Soonwoo Kwon 6-2 6-1 in an hour and a half, downing the world number 76 without too much trouble. In other results, John Isner fought off a challenge from qualifier and compatriot, Tommy Paul 7-6 3-6 6-2 to face another American in the semi-finals with Taylor Fritz defeating Brit, Kyle Edmund 6-4 6-3.

A number of young guns will receive a rankings boost from their Mexico Open finish, with teenagers Wang Xiyu and Leylah Fernandez making it through to the semi-finals. Along with the pair, Mexican wildcard, Renata Zarazua and seventh seed Heather Watson also booked their spots in the semis.

The 69th ranked Watson is clearly the top ranked player of the quartet, with Xiyu (127th), Fernandez (190th) and 22-year-old Zarazua (270th) all rank outsiders heading into the tournament, but showing what they could show in the future. Xiyu defeated compatriot, Zhu Lin to knock the sixth seed out of contention 6-2 6-2 and face seventh seed Watson in the semis after the Brit downed American, Christina McHale. In the other half of the draw, Fernandez won the battle of the teens, defeating Russian talent, Anastasia Potapova 6-3 7-5, while Zarazua kept the home crowd happy by booking her spot in the last four with a three-set win over Slovenian, Tania Zidasek 6-2 3-6 6-2.

With the current results, Xiyu is up to 107th in the world, Fernandez is up to 140th and Zarazua has bolted up almost 100 ranking spots to 189th.
