BENOIT Paire has provided the biggest upset of the day at the 2020 ATP Madrid Open fantasy tennis tournament with a come-from-behind victory over 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut. The unseeded Frenchman won 4-6 6-3 6-3 against the BMW Open finalists to be the only unseeded player to win through against a seeded one on the day.

There was no shortage of three-set thrillers in contrast to the one-sided day one, with eight of the 12 matches lasting the distance. While this time he escaped against Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils had his work cut out for him with a come-from-behind 5-7 6-2 6-4 victory. Also made to work from a first set loss was Croatian Marin Cilic who came back to down Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, 2-6 6-1 7-6.

Italian up and comer Matteo Berrettini took out Brit Kyle Edmund in three sets, 6-2 3-6 6-3, while it was a lot easier for 15th seed Karen Khachnov who brushed aside Nick Kyrgios in a 6-1 6-2 victory. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov applied a similar amount of pain to Kyrgios’ compatriot Alex de Minaur in a 6-4 6-1 victory while Argentinian wildcard Juan Martin del Potro smashed young Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-2 6-1 in the quickest match of the day – just 48 minutes.

The only other straight sets win was American Reilly Opelka over Brit Daniel Evans, as the remaining four winners all had to fight through in three sets. A trio of qualifiers in Guido Pella, Jeremy Chardy and Laslo Djere all won the first set then had to fight back from a second set loss to record wins over their respective opponents. In the final match of the day, Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas downed Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in a 6-1 2-6 6-2 victory.

Tomorrow’s action sees the Round of 32 take place with the top four seeds – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer – all joining proceedings.
