DESPITE being at the pointy end of the 2020 ATP Roland Garros fantasy tennis tournament, the upsets continue to deliver with the two remaining unseeded players through to the quarter finals. Both Slovenian Aljaz Bedene and Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry made their way into the last eight with five seed wins over top 25 opponents.

Bedene defeated ninth seed Gael Monfils and would be the most disliked person at the tournament after bundling out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga yesterday. The Slovenian took five sets to dismiss the world number nine, winning 6-4 6-7 6-2 4-6 6-1 to send Monfils packing. Similarly, Jarry had to survive a real challenge from Grand Slam winner Andy Murray before posting a win, getting up 7-6 4-6 4-6 7-5 6-2 in four and a half hours.

The only other player outside the top eight seeds to win through to the final eight was 19th seed Chilean Cristian Garin. For the first time, two Chilean players are through to the last eight at Roland Garros, and it was an emphatic win for the top 20 player. He knocked off world number four and Grand Slam titles leader Roger Federer in straight sets, cruising to a 6-1 6-3 6-3 victory. He now faces Bedene in a match he will head in strong favourite for tomorrow.

In other results, the top three seeds moved through to the quarter finals, with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem all booking their places in the last eight as expected. Nadal toppled top 20 Italian Fabio Fognini in four sets, 6-2 6-4 6-4, as Djokovic shook off 12th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 6-1 6-2, and Thiem won in a tight three-setter against 17th seed Serbian Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-4 7-6.

The final two matches saw seventh seed German Alexander Zverev make it through to book a date with Djokovic after defeating 16th seed Russian Karen Khachanov, 6-1 5-7 6-2 7-5, while Diego Schwartzman continued his ripping form to knock out 10th seed Swiss star Stan Wawrinka, 6-7 2-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in four and a half hours of action. It was a remarkable come-from-behind win with Schwartzman now taking on Nadal in the quarter finals. The other quarter final sees Thiem up against Jarry.
