ATP Tour wraps: Seeds fall in Round of 16 at Rotterdam and Buenos Aires
PLENTY went on at the two ATP Tour competitions during their respective Day 4 proceedings. Today’s Round of 16 matches at the Argentina ATP 250 tournament are still only part-way done, but the pressure is on with one seed winning and one seed falling already at both competitions today, and a couple more yet to take the court.
Rotterdam’s day is complete, headlined by an excellent win from qualifying Frenchman Jeremy Chardy over sixth seed David Goffin, whilst Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame a headstrong Hubert Hurkacz. The tight encounter between Chardy and Goffin was the one to watch, as the two plus-30-year-olds committed to a 7-6 7-6 result in one hour and 43 minutes, as Chardy narrowly came away with the second set tiebreaker 7-5. It was the Frenchman’s first serve efficiency that saved his game, serving at an excellent 73 per cent clip compared to Goffin’s 58 per cent, and while both players won 78 per cent of their first serve points, Chardy narrowly had more winning chances with 40 made from 51 attempts to Goffin’s 36 from 46.
The matchup between Tsitsipas and Hurkacz was nothing to scoff at though, with the 6-4 4-6 7-5 result seeing Hurkacz come close to executing a huge comeback after a tight first set. Whilst the Polish world number 30 made Tsitsipas fight for victory, with eight aces to the Greek’s three, Hurkacz also made more unforced errors and racked up six double faults to Tsitsipas’ nil, with the story told in their respective service efficiency. Tsitsipas won 80 per cent of his first serve points off a 66 per cent clip (54 from 82) compared to Hurkacz’s 76 per cent off 57 per cent (54 from 95), with the latter wasting opportunities.
In other games, qualifier Marton Fucsovics continued his solid run with a straight sets 6-3 6-2 victory over Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in just over 90 minutes, as Croatian Borna Coric picked up an identical result in one hour and 12 minutes over Dusan Lajovic, and Tommy Paul came from a set down to defeat Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6-7 6-3 6-1.

In Argentina, proceedings have gone much the same as sixth seed Pablo Andujar defeated Italian Gianluca Mager in straight sets, whilst Benoit Paire struggled to maintain pressure on qualifying Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, winning the first set but unable to clinch the win in three sets following a disagreement with the chair umpire. The battle between Andujar and Mager took over two hours to complete, as Andujar won the first set 6-4 following an early break, whilst Mager well and truly took it to the Spaniard in the second set before eventually going down 6-4 7-6 in 121 minutes. Whilst Mager hit 10 aces and three double faults to Andujar’s three apiece, the sixth seed made better use of his service games and was more consistent overall, utilising all his experience to outlast the world number 101.
In the encounter between Paire and Cerundolo, it was the 22-year-old Argentinian who came out on top in the 4-6 6-3 6-1 matchup, with Paire’s docked points following a disagreement in the second set resulting in the Frenchman appearing to “tank” for the remainder of the match. But that was not to say that Cerundolo did not deserve the victory, with his whopping 81 per cent service efficiency proving crucial, winning just 67 per cent of his first serve points but having more opportunities to get on the board. Cerundolo also saved 71 per cent (five from seven) of his break points, as the Frenchman struggled to effectively compete after the tight first set.
At time of publish, Jaume Munar leads Frances Tiafoe in their encounter, as the Spaniard took out the tight 7-6 (7-4) first set. The remaining match will see top seed and homegrown hero Diego Schwartzman take the court against qualifying Slovakian Lukas Klein.
