WTA Tour wrap: Russia dominate St Petersburg as qualifiers reign supreme in Monterrey
IT was a massive day on court for Russia at St Petersburg Ladies Trophy, with all four home nation players advancing through to the quarter finals, while the rest of the Round of 32 were completed at the Abierto GNP Seguros, and the Round of 16 underway.
It was a quadruple treat in St Petersburg for the home fans as four Russians booked their spots in the quarter finals courtesy of wins in the Round of 16 overnight. Top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova led the charge with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Czech Tereza Martincova, followed by fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova‘s straight sets win over Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu, 6-1 7-5.
The big upset was veteran Vera Zvonareva‘s come-from-behind epic match against third seed Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro. Zvonareva needed three hours and 10 minutes to finally shake off Ferro, winning 6-7 7-5 7-6. Having dropped the first set in a heartbreaking 8-6 result, the Russian bounced back to take the second set 7-5, then held on in the third set tiebreaker to win that 7-3.
In other results, the fourth Russian to win was Anastasia Gasanova who knocked off Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska in three sets, 6-2 6-7 7-5, while Romanian qualifier Jaqueline Cristian upset sixth seed Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, winning 6-3 7-6 in just under two hours of action in the late match.
