America’s day on The Drive as American women shine

IT WAS a pretty good day to be an American at the Adelaide International yesterday, as all four American women that took to the court emerged victorious.

The biggest of those wins went to young star Ashlyn Krueger, who upset fifth seed Paula Badosa in three sets 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

It was a match full of aces (nine in total between the pair) but also full of double faults, with Krueger recording nine of them and Badosa recording eight of them.

Interestingly, Krueger had a better percentage of her first serves in, but Badosa won a higher percentage of points off her first serve. One area that the American did dominate in though was the number of break points saved, where she saved almost 70 per cent of the break points she faced compared to just 45 per cent of the break points the Spaniard saved.

Her next opponent will be fellow American Jessica Pegula, after the top seed easily accounted for Maria Sakkari in straight sets.

This is now the third time in a row Pegula has beaten Sakkari, and Pegula said that she drew on this recent good run against the Greek to help her to victory yesterday.

“I have played her a bunch of times so there was a little strategy that I wanted to execute, and I was able to do that,” she said post match.

Emma Navarro and Madison Keys also picked up wins yesterday, with the former beating Ekaterina Alexandrova and the latter upsetting eighth seed and defending champion Jelena Ostapenko.
