Around The Tour: All-Russian final set for Ningbo

THOUGH the Japan Open in Osaka got washed out, there was still plenty of semi-finals action taking place across both the WTA and ATP Tours overnight. The WTA 500 final contestants in Ningbo were determined, with an all-Russian duo scheduled for the decider in fifth seed Daria Kasatkina and unseeded teenager Mirra Andreeva winning their respective semis.

Kasatkina had the easier of the games, winning the opening set 6-4 against former world number three Paula Badosa before her opponent had to retire mid-match due to dizziness. The pair had initially struggled to get on the court due to rain – and there were two further weather interruptions – but in the end, Kasatkina won the battle of the former Top 10 players to reach the final.

“I feel sorry for Paula and I wish her all the best,” Kasatkina said post-match. “It’s never easy to finish a match like this, especially in the semifinals.”

Before the retirement, Kasatkina managed to break two times to one, setting up seven break point opportunities, while being more consistent off her second serve (56 per cent), off a 73 per cent clip. She will now take on Andreeva who also won via retirement.

Leading Czech Karolina Muchova 6-2 1-0, Andreeva was announced the winner when Muchova had to stop play due to a back injury and also withdrew in the earlier semi-final.

“That’s not how I would like to finish the match,” Andreeva said post-match. “I’m just happy the way I managed to play the first set. Of course I just hope it’s nothing too serious, and we can see [Muchova] back on court soon.”

The 17-year-old is currently sitting inside the Top 20 and searching for her second career WTA Tour title after Iasi earlier this year. Her backhands were on full display against Muchova in the win and was looking forward to a blockbuster clash against Kasatkina.

European Open | Antwerp, Belgium – ATP 250

Czech Jiri Lehecka will search for his second ATP Tour title in Antwerp after seeing off the threat of American eighth seed Marcos Giron in the semi-finals. Fifth seeded Lehecka won 6-3 4-6 6-2 to book his place in the decider to take on veteran Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. The unseeded former Top 10 player defeated Frenchman Hugo Gaston in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.

Nordic Open | Stockholm, Sweden – ATP 250

The two highest ranked players booked their spots in the Stockholm decider with third seed Grigor Dimitrov and fourth seed Tommy Paul both victorious in the respective semi-finals. Dimitrov knocked off seventh seed Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in a come-from-behind 2-6 7-5 6-4 win, while Paul ended the run of Swiss star Stan Wawrinka rather easily, 6-3 6-2.

Almaty Open | Almaty, Kazakhstan – ATP 250

Russian hope Karen Khachanov will head into the Almaty Open final as strong favourite after a surprisingly tougher-than-expected battle against Australian Aleksandar Vukic. The world number 85 Aussie had shocked top seed Frances Tiafoe at the ATP 250 event and won the first set against the third seed, but eventually Khachanov got back on top to win 6-7 6-3 6-4. In the other semi-final, Canadian Gabriel Diallo upset fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 6-2 in just 67 minutes.
