ASB Classic: Day 6 wrap – Second seed Martic out before quarter finals

ASB Classic Day 6 saw four matches play out to finish off the Round of 16, knocking out second and eighth seed in the process. The victors of these matches will all take each other on in the quarter finals.

Alize Cornet had a slow start against second seed, Petra Martic before prevailing in the second and third set to win her way to the next round, 3-6 6-4 6-4. The two-plus hour long match saw neither player willing to give way in the highly contested battle. Jessica Pegula also heads into the next round after a stellar win over Tamara Zidansek, collecting a 2-6 3-6 straight sets win. Ranking at 82 Pegula will be happy with her performance, getting over the line with relative ease against a higher ranked opponent.

Meanwhile, Eugenie Bouchard defeated eighth seed Caroline Garcia, 6-4 6-4, The highly contested match captured interest with intensity and speed behind every hit, with neither player willing to back down. Bouchard was clinical with 73 per cent of wins on the first serve, collecting only her second win against Garcia. Third seed Amanda Anisimova was well in control against Russian, Daria Kasatkina early, maintaining intensity and collecting a solid 6-2 6-4 victory.
